Crypto vs. coccidiosis in calves can both cause diarrhea, but they’re not the same disease — and treating them as if they are can mean losing valuable time.

One of the biggest clues is age. Cryptosporidiosis typically affects young, pre-weaned calves under six weeks of age. Coccidiosis generally occurs later, in weaned and feedlot calves. Crypto commonly causes watery diarrhea, while coccidiosis may produce diarrhea containing blood.

The treatment options are different, too.

Anticoccidial products including amprolium, sulfonamides, Rumensin and Deccox are available for coccidiosis. Those same approaches have been tested against Crypto and are not effective against it.

That’s why correctly identifying the challenge matters.

Crypto Guard® was developed specifically for Cryptosporidium. Its proteins come from all life-cycle stages of the parasite and are delivered directly through milk or milk replacer for seven days to begin priming the gut early in life.

Two parasites. Two very different challenges.

Knowing which one you’re dealing with is the first step toward choosing the right approach.
